"The Forgotten Mines around Sheffield" (Gannister & Pot Clay)

"The Forgotten Mines of Sheffield” examines the rise and decline of Gannister and other clay mining and processing, and its impact on life in the settlements and upon the landscape of western Sheffield.
Parts of the eastern slopes of the Pennines, which coincide with the western fringes of Sheffield, are littered with the remnants of this mining industry that is fading from the memory of many Sheffielders.
Around Stocksbridge, Oughtibridge, Wadsley, Loxley, Stannington, Ecclesall Woods and Totley this extractive industry developed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries before moving into obscurity over the last fifty years. At one time companies such as Dysons, Marshalls, Wraggs and General Refractories, who owned the mines and produced refractory materials, were well known to inhabitants of Deepcar, Dore, Dungworth, Loadbrook, Worrall, and to many others.
The rise of this industry had a significant impact on the life in these settlements. These effects are examined in the book, as is life within the mines.
The impact of the industry is still evident in the area for those who know where to look!
